Anthem release date Q1 2019/FY19 Q4 - EA's Fiscal Year Explained

There is some confusion in the Anthem fans community regarding the recent info that came from EA's Q4 FY18 Earnings Slides. The game's official website slates it for "early 2019" release. But in the earnings pdf we see Q4 2019.

So which one is it? Q1 2019 or Q4 2019?
You're confused and we know it, because we were confused as well.

Thankfully our good friend Leo from GamingInstincts helped us with it and managed to make sense of the finance terms used that most gamers aren't used to hear and don't know what they mean!

Okay so first things first. We all know about the calendar year and are familiar with it starting on Jan 1st each year and ending on December 31st.

Which this is true for civilians to use and calculate/manage their time and various events throughout a year, it is NOT true for businesses. Those use another system, called Fiscal Year.

A fiscal year (FY) is a period that a company or government uses for accounting purposes and preparing financial statements.

A fiscal year may not be the same as a calendar year, and for tax purposes, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows companies to be either calendar-year taxpayers or fiscal-year taxpayers.
Fiscal years are commonly referred to when discussing budgets and are often a convenient period to reference when comparing a government's or company's financial performance over time.

So what does all this mean? What does it have to do with Anthem? Let me explain.

EA's fiscal year ends every year on March 31st of the calendar year. And a new fiscal year begins on April 1st.

To make sense of this, the current fiscal year for Electronic Arts is FY19.
Yes, that is not a typo.19. Their FY18, ended on March 31st 2018.

We know, it doesn't make sense. Bear with us!

Currently, we are in Q2 of EA's fiscal year for 2019. EA's fiscal year for 2018 has just ended and was divided like this:

EA's 2018 fiscal year

Q1: April 1st to June 30th (2017)

Q2: July 1st to September 31st (2017)

Q3: October 1st to December 31st (2017)

Q4: January 1st to March 31st (2018)

This means that Q1 2019 on a calender year and Q4 FY19 of a fiscal year are essentially the same dates. (for EA's model, other companies might follow their own dates!)

Any date between January 1st 2019 and March 31st 2019 (on a calendar) is both Q1 2019 and Q4 FY19.

In conclusion, Anthem is still on track for release sometime between January and March of next year, 2019.

Thankfully we have 2 major events coming up next month, so that will hopefully shine some light on what exactly the game is about, how it plays and maybe answer some more specific questions such as customization options, classes and possibly something about Anthem's micro-transactions model.

Who know we might even get an exact release date which will clear up all the confusion around it!

Until then, stay strong and positive fellow freelancers!
